Introduction

Microsoft Fabric offers powerful access control mechanisms to manage item permissions, ensuring secure access and effective governance. In the DP-600 certification exam, understanding how to implement item-level access controls is essential. In this tutorial, you'll learn how to share individual items within a Fabric workspace.

Item-level Access Control

Item-level access controls in Microsoft Fabric allow you to restrict or grant permissions for specific items such as datasets, reports, dashboards, or notebooks without giving users access to the entire workspace. This ensures that only authorized users can interact with certain items while maintaining overall workspace security.

If you need to provide a specific user or group with access to particular items in a workspace—without granting them broader access to the entire workspace—you should share those specific items directly with them. This approach ensures that users only see and interact with the shared content while having no visibility into other workspace items. Additionally, users do not require any workspace roles, making this an effective way to manage limited access securely.

Microsoft Fabric Book

We are delighted to publish a hands-on guide to implementing end-to-end data projects in Microsoft Fabric. This hands-on book walks you through the key components and functionalities of Microsoft Fabric and invites you to actively follow the steps yourself.

Share Items in Microsoft Fabric

First, select the desired Fabric item and click Manage permissions.

There are two primary ways to share specific items within a workspace in Microsoft Fabric:

  1. Direct Access
  2. Share via Link

Option 1: Direct Access

This method allows you to share an item with specific users or groups by explicitly granting access.
